About The Event

  • Learn about Greek art, architecture, culture, food, and philosophy through storytelling, art history and by creating a 3-D work of art. On day one students will reenact the day in the life of an ancient Greek student of philosophy and prepare for the ancient Greek symposium. Students will use terra-cotta clay to create a special cup. In antiquity this drinking vessel was called a krater and was made for these social gatherings. Together in our symposium we will explore the teachings of ancient greek philosopher Thales and his concept of "Know Thyself" and other ancient teachings. We will have a sensory exploration of the staple foods ancient Greece, together with "grape wine" we will have grapes, feta, olive oil, bread and oregano which will be prepared and served at our symposium. On day two students will be introduced to Ancient Greek architecture and the mosaic arts of Knossos. Through immersion in the studio art experience we will explore the geometry and symbolism of the three Ancient Greek columns, the Knossos mosaic wall reliefs and the sacred geometry found throughout Ancient Greek art. Each student will create a relief sculpture using ancient sea glass mosaic designs. All materials are Included in this 3.5 hour class and in addition we will provide a freshly prepared healthy organic snack and spend time outdoors weather permitting. Optional BYOL
